You are now at the site of Redwood City's first hotel, the former American Hotel, built in 1853 as a crude one- story structure. In 1856, it was in this hotel that votes were counted to incorporate San Mateo County. Political scoundrels from San Francisco brazenly stuffed the ballot boxes in hopes of controlling the new county. The election was eventually overturned and Redwood City became the county seat. After a fire in 1864, a new three-story structure was completed in 1867 and named American House. This new hotel lasted until 1878, when it also burned down. The Wahl Building was then constructed and was partially torn down in 1931 when Broadway was extended.
