Now you are in front of the original home of the San Mateo County Building and Loan Association which was organized in 1890 and remained here until the 1960s. One of the safes used in the early 1900s is still in the building. The structure is of a type called a two-part commercial block in the Neo-Classical Style. The building is part of a larger ensemble of historic structures in the heart of old Redwood City. This is one of four buildings which have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic Commercial District.
